Family Alleges Negligence After Woman Delivers Dead Baby in MCCH Washroom

Anantnag, July 1, KNT: A woman from Hallan Verinag delivered a dead baby inside the washroom of Maternity and Child Care Hospital (MCCH) Islamabad (Anantnag) on Wednesday, with the family alleging that negligence by medical staff led to the tragedy. The incident triggered strong protests outside the hospital as relatives demanded action against those responsible.

According to family members, Ruqiya Banoo, wife of Muhammad Akhtar, had been admitted for delivery when she developed intense pain around 5 a.m. Her mother told KNT that despite repeated pleas to the paramedical staff in the labour ward, no one responded to the patient’s distress. She alleged the staff told her that doctors were asleep and would not attend the patient at that hour.

The family said that as the pain became unbearable, Ruqiya moved towards the washroom in an attempt to relieve herself and delivered a stillborn baby there. Relatives and attendants later assembled outside the hospital, accusing the staff of failing to provide timely medical attention.

In Charge Medical Superintendent of MCCH, Dr Mirab, told KNT he would examine the matter. He said doctors remain available in the hospital throughout the day and night and added that while he did not believe it was a case of negligence, he would still initiate a review of the incident.
