Kishtwar road accident leaves 8 dead

Eight people, including four women, were killed when the Tata Sumo in which they were travelling skidded off the road and plunged into Renie Nallah in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, officials said.

Official sources told news agency Kashmir News Trust that all the persons on board including the driver have been killed in the mishap.

They said, rescue teams, comprising police, and Army personnel and local villagers, carried out the rescue operation.

Top police and administrative officials reached the scene of the accident immediately after hearing the news and were seen supervising the rescue operation, officials said.

Some of the deceased have been identified as Muhammad Amin Sheikh of Chunjor March, Umer Gani Shah (driver) of Nowapachi Marwah, Muhammad Irfan Hajam of Qaderna Marwah, Afaq Ahmad Hajam of Thachna Marwah, Safoora Bano of Anjer Marwah, Muzamilla Banoo and Asia Banoo, both residents of Yardoo Marwah.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh termed the accident as unfortunate and said all possible help, as required, will be provided.

“Just now spoke to DC Kishtwar Dr Devansh Yadav after receiving the news of an unfortunate Tata Sumo road accident in Marwah area. 8 persons have died on the spot, rescue operations in progress to recover other persons. All possible assistance being provided, further help as needed would also be made available. My sincere condolences to bereaved families,” he tweeted. [KNT]
