After the Supreme Court stayed conviction of Rahul Gandhi in 2019 Criminal Defamation Case over his Modi surname remark and restores his MP status, political parties from Jammu and Kashmir except BJP welcomed the decision and termed the verdict in the interest of democracy.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti tweeted and expressed happiness over the Supreme Court’s decision.
Omar Abdullah congratulated to the people of Wayanad upon having their representation in the Lok Sabha restored.
Mehbooba Mufti tweeted: “I welcome the SC verdict staying Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in a case that had no legs to stand upon. Glad that he will be back in Parliament fighting for the idea of India.”
Former Union Minister Prof. Saifuddin Soz said that: “It is heartening to know that the Supreme Court of India has restored the MP Ship of Rahul Gandhi today and also stayed all other defamation charges lodged against him by the ruling party at the Centre.”
He said that: “I think the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s decision will be a celebration for millions of people in India and elsewhere, who have faith in the Congress party as a strong secular force dedicated to the cause of Democracy and Togetherness of all Indians, irrespective of caste, color and creed.”
Soz further said that he is having a feeling that the general run of Indians also hopes that Rahul Gandhi will continue to raise his powerful voice in the Lok Sabha with his emphasis on communal harmony in India and solidarity of all Indians. [KNT]
