Kupwara, Aug 9, KNT: The Cyber Cell in North Kashmir’s Kupwara has achieved remarkable success in cracking a series of online financial fraud cases, thereby safeguarding the hard-earned money of various individuals who had fallen prey to the deceitful tactics of cybercriminals.
In one of the incidents, the Cyber Cell Kupwara received a complaint regarding an online financial fraud of Rs one lakh, where the victim was deceived into transferring Rs 5 via PhonePe for a migration certificate update. Immediately, the Cyber Cell collected evidence and information from the victim. Utilizing cyber tactics, the police team successfully blocked the fraudulent transactions, saving the entire amount of Rs one lakh.
In another incident, Cyber Cell Kupwara as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust received a complaint where a victim was defrauded of Rs 4,07,000, with the promise of doubling the amount within a month. The victim made multiple transactions into various accounts provided by the fraudster. Upon receiving the complaint, the Cyber Cell swiftly collected evidence and information. They successfully blocked the transactions, putting Rs 1,75,337 on hold, and initiated the refund process.
In another incident, a victim was defrauded of Rs 25,800. The fraudster, posing as a Dental Doctor from the UK, contacted the victim on Facebook, shared their WhatsApp number, and gained trust by chatting for a while. The scammer then asked for the victim’s address, promising to send gifts, and the victim complied, resulting in the loss. Upon receiving the complaint, Cyber Cell Kupwara swiftly collected evidence and blocked the transaction, saving the entire amount of Rs 25,800.
The Superintendent of Police, Kupwara, urged the public to be cautious of online frauds, advising them to avoid suspicious links, fake SMS messages, and unauthorized apps, as well as fake tasks on Instagram and Telegram. The public is also urged to be vigilant when sharing personal information online. [KNT]
