Jammu, Apr 8, KNT: Tempers flared for the second consecutive day inside the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly as the Opposition mounted pressure over the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.
Members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and National Conference (NC) disrupted proceedings, demanding that the Union Government roll back the recent amendments to the Waqf law.

PDP legislator Waheed ur Rehman Parra dramatically stormed into the well of the House, urging Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather to immediately consider a fresh resolution his party had submitted, calling for the repeal of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. Parra accused the government of centralizing control over local Waqf properties and undermining the community’s religious and charitable interests.

“This amendment is not just an administrative shift—it’s a direct assault on our religious autonomy and community rights,” Parra shouted amid sloganeering from the Opposition benches.
Meanwhile, NC MLA Salman Sagar joined the protest, demanding an open and in-depth discussion on the Wakf Bill. “The Waqf Board is being reduced to a puppet under central control. We must debate the implications of this law,” Sagar said.
Outside the House, several members slammed the Waqf (Amendment) Act, calling it “yet another step to disempower local institutions.”
The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, allows greater control of Waqf Boards by the Union Government and mandates appointment of key members through a central panel, a move critics say strips the region of its say in managing religious endowments. [KNT]
