Mosques Must Evolve Into Dynamic Centres of Faith: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Lays Foundation Stone for Masjid Botshah Sahib

Srinagar, July 8, KNT: In a poignant reaffirmation of the mosque’s enduring significance in Muslim socio-religious life, Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir, Dr Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq, on Monday emphasized that mosques must transcend their conventional role as mere places of ritual worship and reassert themselves as active epicentres of Islamic learning, moral reform, and community engagement.
Speaking at a modest yet spiritually uplifting ceremony marking the foundation stone laying for the reconstruction of Masjid Hanfia Boota Shah Sahib at Boota Shah Mohalla in Srinagar’s Lal Bazar area, the Mirwaiz delivered a stirring message that resonated deeply with the assembled congregation. He exhorted the local community, particularly the younger generation, to imbue these sacred spaces with life and purpose, ensuring they serve not only as architectural achievements but as living institutions that respond to the evolving moral and social needs of the ummah.
“While the physical act of constructing a mosque is undoubtedly meritorious, the greater responsibility lies in sustaining its spiritual and communal vitality,” the Mirwaiz remarked. “A mosque must be a place where the teachings of Islam are not only preached but practiced in service to justice, compassion, and societal harmony.”

In a notable departure from customary mosque design norms in the region, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq placed particular emphasis on the need to make adequate and dignified provisions for the participation of women within mosque premises. “Women are not merely peripheral members of the household; they are the architects of future generations, the first guides of our children, and indispensable stakeholders in any moral and spiritual rejuvenation,” he observed. Recognizing this, he called for a deliberate and respectful inclusion of women in mosque activities, in keeping with Islamic principles of equity and collective responsibility.
This progressive vision found ready acceptance among the local populace and the mosque management committee, who assured the Mirwaiz that appropriate infrastructural arrangements for women’s access and engagement would be incorporated into the new mosque design. The commitment reflects a growing awareness within the community of the need for inclusive religious spaces that reflect the full spectrum of Islamic values.
The gathering, which included elders, youth, and prominent residents of the locality, welcomed the Mirwaiz with warmth and reverence. His presence and message appeared to galvanize the community, reinforcing their resolve to not only complete the mosque’s physical reconstruction with urgency but to redefine its function as a beacon of faith and collective betterment.
Expressing heartfelt appreciation for the community’s dedication and foresight, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq offered prayers for the swift and successful completion of the mosque. He invoked the hope that this sacred space would serve not only as a sanctuary of worship but as a nucleus for moral education, intergenerational dialogue, and social cohesion in the years to come.
