Chakki River railway bridge faces threat after protection wall washes away

Jammu, Aug 25, KNT: The Chakki River railway bridge, a key structure linking Jammu Kashmir and Punjab, has come under fresh threat after a portion of its protection wall was washed away due to heavy soil erosion triggered by continuous rains.
According to local reports, strong currents in the Chakki River caused severe erosion along the riverbank, damaging the protective embankment built to safeguard the railway bridge. The collapse of the wall has raised concerns over the stability of the bridge, which carries significant passenger and freight traffic daily.
Railway authorities and engineers rushed to the spot to assess the extent of the damage. Officials said that while the bridge itself remains intact, the erosion has weakened its protection system, warranting urgent repair work to prevent further damage.
Locals living near the river expressed alarm, recalling past incidents when heavy floods in the Chakki had endangered the bridge and even forced suspension of rail services in the region. They appealed to the administration and railway authorities to undertake immediate protective measures to avert any disruption and ensure passenger safety. [KNT]
