Riding Without Helmets Becomes Routine in Srinagar

Srinagar, Aug 19, KNT: Open violation of traffic rules has become a growing concern in Srinagar, where bikers are frequently seen riding without helmets or valid licenses. The practice, according to respectable citizens, has now become a new normal in the city.

Eyewitnesses said that even minors, including girls, openly drive two-wheelers on busy roads without wearing helmets or carrying licenses. In many cases, bikers are seen hanging their helmets on the back of the motorcycle rather than wearing them.

What has alarmed people further is that such violations are not confined to interior or link roads. Riders without helmets are also seen in sensitive and busy areas like Tourist Reception Centre (TRC), Raj Bagh, Lal Chowk, Dalgate, Sonawar and other prominent parts of the city.

Locals said the trend poses a serious risk to both the riders and pedestrians. “Accidents can turn fatal when riders flout basic safety measures. The worrying part is that traffic police are often seen in these areas, yet such violations continue unchecked,” said a commuter.

Citizens have appealed to the traffic authorities to intensify checks and take strict action to enforce road safety norms across Srinagar. [KNT]
