Stray Cows on Srinagar-Pampore Highway Pose Serious Risk to Commuters

Srinagar, Aug 4, KNT: Stray cows roaming freely along the Srinagar-Pampore highway have emerged as a persistent hazard, posing a serious risk to commuters and contributing to multiple near-miss incidents in recent weeks.
Locals and daily travelers allege that the presence of unattended cattle on this busy stretch of NH-44, particularly between Pantha Chowk and Kadlabal—is a growing cause of concern. With vehicles moving at high speeds and visibility often compromised during early morning and evening hours, sudden appearances of animals on the road have led to panic braking, swerving, and in some cases, collisions.
“We are playing with our lives every day. Just last week, a two-wheeler lost control while avoiding a cow near Galandar. Luckily, he escaped with minor injuries,” said Showkat Ahmad, a resident of Pampore.

Transporters and private vehicle owners blame the district administration for failing to take preventive steps despite repeated complaints.
The issue stems from both stray cattle abandonment and negligent livestock owners who allow their animals to wander unattended. They warn that unless concrete measures are taken, including the impounding of stray cattle the highway will continue to remain a threat to human lives. [KNT]
