HRDS India to build 1,500 free smart houses for J&K victims of calamities, shelling

Srinagar, Sep 11, KNT: The High-range Rural Development Society (HRDS India) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Divisional Commissioners of Jammu and Kashmir for construction of houses damaged during Operation Sindoor, recent floods and militant violence across the Union Territory.

The initiative, taken under the vision of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, aims to provide not only shelter but also long-term social and digital security to affected families. The MoU signing ceremony was held at Raj Bhawan where the Lieutenant Governor lauded HRDS India for the noble endeavour.

As part of the agreement, HRDS India will construct 1,500 three-bedroom “smart houses” equipped with modern features for comfort, safety and digital connectivity. “Construction of houses is more than just putting up a structure. It is about building dreams, a fresh start and a new chapter in the lives of affected families. Human losses are so profound and devastating that they cannot be measured, but this initiative will definitely ease their suffering,” Lieutenant Governor Sinha remarked.

Under the initiative, HRDS India and the Divisional Commissioners will also identify families of militant victims whose houses were destroyed. Each beneficiary household will receive a 15-year life insurance coverage for all family members, along with free monthly health check-ups.

To ensure digital inclusion, HRDS India, in collaboration with BSNL, will provide free internet access to every beneficiary household. Trained volunteers will visit these homes monthly to spread awareness about government schemes and conduct sessions on health, education, hygiene and preventive care.

In addition, HRDS India has committed to repainting each house every five years at no cost to the beneficiaries.
