Wular Lake water level inches close to flood declaration mark

Bandipora, Sept 6, KNT: Wular Lake, Asia’s second-largest freshwater body, has been rising steadily and is now barely a foot short of the official Flood Declaration Mark, officials said on Saturday.
The increase, however, has been slow, with the water level climbing at a rate of nearly 0.5 inches per hour in recent hours.
Officials noted that the Jhelum river at Asham has shown a drop of a couple of feet, an encouraging sign that the situation around Wular may stabilize soon.

Authorities said they are maintaining strict vigil around the lake and its adjoining areas, which have already seen precautionary evacuations earlier this week due to the rising waters.
Local residents said the gradual increase has kept them anxious, though the recent dip at Asham has given hope that the worst may have been averted.
The district administration has advised people living in low-lying areas around Wular to remain alert and follow advisories in case of further fluctuations. [KNT]
