Mostly Dry Weather Expected Across J&K Zojila Records Minus 8°C, Sinthan Top Buried Under 9 Inches of Snow

Srinagar, Oct 7, KNT: Mostly dry weather is expected across Jammu and Kashmir today, with a few southern and hilly districts likely to witness short-lived showers till the afternoon. Light rain may continue in parts of Kishtwar, Doda, Anantnag, Ramban, Udhampur, and Kathua before conditions turn dry across the Union Territory later in the day.

According to ‘the Kashmir Weather forecaster,’ the overall trend suggests that dry weather will dominate across J&K until October 20, with only isolated spots expected to receive brief rainfall during the period. This comes as the region stabilizes after several days of rain and snowfall that affected higher elevations last week.

In a significant drop, the minimum temperature at Zojila Pass plunged to minus 8.0 degrees Celsius, indicating early signs of winter in the upper reaches. The pass has recorded around six inches of total snowfall, with a current snow depth of five inches and light winds blowing at approximately six kilometres per hour.

Similarly, the snow depth at Sinthan Top has reached between eight and nine inches, while Daksum reported around one to two inches of snow. However, Kokernag remained largely snow-free, pointing to the localized nature of recent weather activity.

Weather experts said the pattern is typical for early October but noted that this season’s intensity at higher passes like Zojila and Sinthan is relatively greater due to back-to-back western disturbances that swept through the region over the past week.

Weather authorities have predicted a dry and calm phase for most districts, favourable for travel and outdoor activities. However, commuters have been advised to exercise caution on snow-covered mountain routes, especially along the Zojila and Sinthan stretches, where slippery conditions may persist. [KNT]
