Baramulla Police shuts down pet shop, initiates action under Police Act for illegal trade

 

Baramulla, Nov 5, KNT: Acting on a complaint filed by an Anantnag-based non-governmental organisation, Baramulla Police rescued several animals from an unlicensed pet store in north Kashmir’s Baramulla town. The operation was carried out jointly with the Wildlife Protection Department and the Municipal Council Baramulla.

Officials said that a team from Police Station Baramulla, accompanied by representatives of the Wildlife Department and the civic body, conducted an inspection at a Pet Store following the NGO’s report alleging animal cruelty and illegal trading practices.

“During the inspection, several animals were found confined in poor conditions and were immediately rescued,” an official told the news agency Kashmir News Trust. The rescued animals were formally handed over to the NGO through the Wildlife Department on proper receipt for further care and rehabilitation.

Police said that action under Section 36 of the Police Act has been initiated at Police Station Baramulla, and the shopkeeper has been directed to keep the establishment closed until a valid licence is produced.

Baramulla Police reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the welfare and safety of animals, urging the public to promptly report any instances of animal cruelty, neglect, or illegal wildlife trade.
