Srinagar, Nov 23, KNT: The Babademb–Barbarshah corridor in Srinagar has been taken over by scrap dealers, second-hand car sellers, furniture outlets, wood carving units and used-goods shops, transforming what was once a functional two-lane road into a congested and disorderly commercial strip. Large portions of the footpaths and even half of the road remain occupied by scrap heaps, parked vehicles and displayed merchandise, forcing pedestrians to walk on the main carriageway and causing repeated traffic bottlenecks.
Concerned citizens said that the entire stretch has gradually turned into an unregulated marketplace, with roadside workshops and dealers operating without checks. They said that despite regular complaints, the encroachments continue to grow, making daily movement increasingly difficult for inhabitants of the area.
A social media user claimed that after he uploaded a video highlighting the condition of the corridor, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation unfollowed him on X, prompting fresh criticism from netizens over the handling of public grievances.
Concerned citizens added that the lack of enforcement has turned the road into a safety hazard, especially during peak hours when school vehicles and office-bound traffic pass through the link. They appealed to the district administration and the traffic department to clear the encroachments and restore the original two-lane structure of the corridor. [KNT]
