Narcotics Control Bureau Arrests 15 Drug Peddlers in Kashmir Over Two Months

Srinagar, Nov 30, KNT: Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Srinagar, has arrested 15 drug peddlers across the Kashmir Valley over the past two months as part of an intensified campaign against narcotics trafficking.

Speaking to the news agency Kashmir News Trust, an NCB official said most of those arrested were dealing not only in natural narcotic substances but also in synthetic drugs. He said the seizures and arrests involved opium and its derivatives, including morphine, codeine and heroin, apart from synthetic drugs like methadone and pethidine, as well as cannabis and coca leaf.

“The establishment of the NCB office in Srinagar is a part of the Government of India’s strategic initiative to strengthen narcotics enforcement in Jammu and Kashmir,” the official said, adding that the Bureau is actively engaged in tracking, pursuing, and dismantling drug networks operating in the Valley.

He said the Bureau has adopted an aggressive enforcement strategy and is closely monitoring trafficking routes and drug distribution channels. The official said intelligence-based operations are being conducted regularly to identify suppliers, carriers and local handlers involved in the illegal trade.

Appreciating inter-agency coordination, the official acknowledged the role of the Jammu and Kashmir Police in extending cooperation whenever required. “Support from the police has been consistent and crucial in several operations,” he said.

The official further revealed that the majority of the arrested individuals have past criminal histories, indicating the involvement of habitual offenders in the narcotics trade. He said sustained legal action and surveillance would continue against repeat offenders and organised drug networks.

He also warned that strict legal measures are being enforced against all those found involved in the narcotics business, asserting that no leniency will be shown in cases that threaten public health and security. [KNT]
