Three Irrigation Officials Arrested After Employee Dies in Suspected Self-Immolation in Jammu

Jammu, Nov 15, KNT: Police in Miran Sahib Jammu have arrested three officials of the Irrigation Department after the death of a government employee who was found severely burnt in open fields near Ring Road Prithvipur earlier this week. The incident, reported on the morning of November 10, has unfolded into a case involving allegations of sustained mental harassment and withholding of salary.
Police said the victim, Puran Chand of R S Pura, was discovered burning in the fields and was immediately rushed to GMC Jammu where he succumbed to his injuries. He was serving as a helper in the Tube-Well Irrigation wing of the Irrigation Department.
Following the registration of FIR No. 109/2025, a detailed investigation was launched. FSL teams examined the spot and collected scientific evidence. Investigators later traced CCTV footage showing Chand travelling on his motorcycle to RG Filling Station at Thikrian, R S Pura, where he purchased petrol in a plastic container before heading toward Miran Sahib.
According to the police, a combination of circumstantial, technical and scientific evidence, including analysis of viral videos and witness testimonies, indicates that the deceased may have taken the extreme step after facing persistent mental harassment at the hands of his departmental seniors. Officials said they are also examining allegations that his salary had been withheld for several months.

During the course of the investigation, police arrested three employees of the Irrigation Department for their alleged role in the events leading to Chand’s death. They were identified as Surjeet Kumar, Incharge Ziladar, a resident of Deoli in Bishnah; Girdhari Lal, an amin from Salehar in Bishnah; and Ram Murti alias Sani, also an Incharge Ziladar, from Arnia in Jammu district.
Police said the investigation is continuing to determine the full chain of responsibility and whether more officials may be implicated as further evidence is examined. [KNT]
