What the Quran Says About Gold?

1. What the Quran Says About Gold
Gold is mentioned multiple times in the Quran, mostly in three contexts:
A. Gold as a blessing for the believers in Paradise
Surah Al-Hajj 22:23
“They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearls…”
Meaning:
Gold is an adornment in Jannah, a sign of honor.
B. Gold worn by people of arrogance or disbelief (worldly pride)
Surah At-Tawbah 9:34
“Those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the way of Allah — give them tidings of a painful punishment.”

Meaning:
Gold itself is not bad, but hoarding it greedily is condemned.
C. Gold mentioned as a luxury object
Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:71
“…and vessels of gold will be passed around them…”
Same context of Paradise.
2. Is Wearing Gold Allowed in Islam?
The Quran does not explicitly forbid wearing gold.
However, the Sunnah gives the detailed ruling:
MEN and WOMEN have different rulings
**A. For Women:
✔ Wearing gold is completely allowed
This is agreed by all schools of Islamic jurisprudence.
Hadith (Sahih al-Bukhari):
The Prophet ﷺ saw two bracelets of gold on a woman and did not forbid her from wearing them, but warned her about zakat if she hoarded them without paying.
Hadith (Tirmidhi):
“The Prophet permitted silk and gold for the women of my ummah.”
**B. For Men:
✘ Wearing gold is prohibited
Clear Hadith:
Hadith (Sahih Muslim):
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Gold and silk have been permitted for the females of my ummah and forbidden for its males.”
Hadith (Bukhari):
The Prophet saw a man wearing a gold ring, removed it, and said:
“One of you is taking a burning coal and placing it on his hand.”
3. Can men own gold (but not wear it)?
✔ Yes, men can own gold.
✔ They can trade it, buy or sell it, save it, pay zakat on it.
They only cannot wear it as jewelry.
4. Why is gold prohibited for men?
Scholars say:
-
To maintain distinction between genders
-
To prevent excessive luxury for men
-
Because the Prophet ﷺ explicitly forbade it
But the prohibition is worship-based (ta‘abbudi) — meaning we follow it because the Prophet commanded it.
5. What about gold plating?
If the item contains real gold, even a thin layer:
Men cannot wear it.
If it is gold COLOR only (without actual gold content):
Allowed.
SUMMARY (short and clear)
✔ Women:
Wearing gold is halal.
✘ Men:
Wearing gold is haram, based on clear Hadith.
(Quran is neutral, but Sunnah clarifies the rule.)
✔ Both:
Can own, trade, or gift gold.
