Detention of Doda MLA ‘illegal and barbaric’, counsel tells High Court

Jammu, Dec 4, KNT: The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on Thursday listed as part heard the habeas corpus petition challenging the detention of Doda MLA Mehraj Malik and fixed December 18, 2025, as the next date of hearing.

The matter was taken up by Justice Mohd Yousaf Wani at the Jammu wing of the High Court. During the proceedings, Senior Advocate Rahul Pant, assisted by Advocates S. S. Ahmed, M. Iqbal Khan, Appu Singh Slathia and M. Zulkarnain Chowdhary, argued at length that the detention of the MLA was “illegal and untenable in the eyes of law.”

Counsel for the petitioner assailed the grounds of detention, with Senior Advocate Rahul Pant terming the action “barbaric, an act of administrative overreach, and an attempt to silence the dissenting voice of an elected representative.” The submissions on behalf of the MLA continued for nearly three hours in the forenoon session.
