Fresh snowfall in parts of North Kashmir as Western Disturbance affects region

Srinagar, Dec 30, KNT: Several areas of North Kashmir witnessed fresh snowfall on Tuesday as a weak Western Disturbance affected Jammu and Kashmir, bringing a spell of rain and snow to the region.

Officials and locals said that snowfall was reported from Machil in Kupwara district, the Tulail Valley, and the tourist resort of Gulmarg. Light to moderate snowfall was also received in other upper reaches, including Sadhna Top, while lower areas experienced intermittent rainfall since morning.

Meteorological officials said the current weather activity is linked to a weak Western Disturbance influencing the region. Under its impact, scattered rain and snowfall were observed in parts of North Kashmir, particularly in higher altitude areas, while the plains remained largely wet with occasional showers.

Despite the ongoing activity, the weather department has ruled out any major rain or snowfall over the next 24 hours. However, intermittent light showers and snowfall may continue at isolated places during this period, especially in the upper reaches.

The fresh snowfall has added to the winter chill in the region, while also improving the scenic appeal of tourist destinations such as Gulmarg. Locals in snowbound areas reported a drop in temperatures following the fresh spell, though no reports of disruption to essential services were received till the filing of this report.

Authorities have advised inhabitants and travellers, particularly those heading towards higher altitude areas, to remain cautious and stay updated with weather advisories, as intermittent precipitation may affect road conditions in vulnerable stretches. [KNT]
