Spike in Fire Risks Prompts Authorities to Issue Detailed Winter Safety Guidelines

Srinagar, Dec 5, KNT: Authorities on Friday issued a detailed winter safety advisory for the general public, urging strict adherence to electrical and heating precautions as fire-related incidents tend to rise sharply during the winter season in Kashmir. Officials said the use of heating appliances, extension cords and high-load equipment increases significantly during the cold months, making households more vulnerable to short circuits and accidental fires.

According to the advisory, people have been asked to ensure proper inspection of electrical wiring, sockets and switches before the onset of severe cold. Authorities stressed that damaged cords, loose connections and ageing wiring pose a major risk and should be replaced or checked by qualified electricians without delay.

The advisory cautioned against the improper use of heating devices, including keeping heaters close to curtains, bedding or other combustible materials. People have been asked not to leave heaters or electric blankets unattended or operational overnight. The use of extension cords for high-power appliances such as geysers and room heaters has also been discouraged due to overloading risks.

Guidelines issued by authorities further highlight the need for proper-rated fuses and circuit breakers to prevent overheating. Residents have been advised to unplug appliances when not in use, especially during power cuts. For geysers, the advisory recommends ensuring the presence of automatic thermostats and cut-off switches, and avoiding contact with wet hands while operating electrical equipment.

In a set of preparedness instructions, authorities urged households to keep dry powder fire extinguishers in easily accessible areas and educate family members about emergency power disconnection. They reiterated that electrical fires must never be extinguished with water and that power supply should be switched off immediately when such incidents occur.

Authorities also emphasised maintaining sufficient space around heaters and ensuring that flammable materials such as paper, fuel or fabric are kept away. They said that responsible use of appliances and timely attention to any signs of sparking, smell or flickering lights can prevent major hazards.

People have been advised to contact Fire and Emergency Services toll-free at 101 or the District Control Room for assistance in case of any fire-related incident. [KNT]
