Waheed Para Defends Mirwaiz Over X Profile Change

Srinagar, Dec 26, KNT: Senior political leader Waheed Para on Thursday came out in defence of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq following the latter’s statement that he was pressured by authorities to alter his X account and remove the designation of chairman Hurriyat Conference.
In a post on X, Para drew a historical parallel with the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, stating that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had agreed to erase the words “Muhammad-ur-Rasoolullah” from the treaty text solely in the interest of peace. He said history remembers that decision not as compromise, but as wisdom, foresight and moral courage.
Referring to Mirwaiz’s decision to remove the APHC tag, Para said that if the step was taken as an act of peace under prevailing circumstances, it must not be weaponised against him. He asserted that choosing peace over rigidity should be seen as leadership rather than weakness.
Para said Mirwaiz had acted within the framework of law and circumstances, and alleged that those attacking and trolling him were deliberately attempting to undermine his position. He said such actions only make Mirwaiz’s path more difficult despite the extraordinary challenges he has endured.

Highlighting the personal sacrifices associated with the Mirwaiz family, Para said targeting Mirwaiz in this manner does not serve justice or peace, but instead deepens divisions within society.
The remarks come amid ongoing debate and reactions following Mirwaiz’s disclosure that authorities had pressed him to change his social media profile, warning of possible action otherwise. [KNT]
