Centre announces key High Court appointments

New Delhi, Jan 3, KNT: The President of India has approved the appointment of new judges to various High Courts, including the appointment of a Chief Justice and Additional Judges, following consultation with the Chief Justice of India, according to an official press communiqué issued on January 2, 2026.
As per the notification, Justice Mahesh Sharadchandra Sonak, presently serving as a Judge of the Bombay High Court, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court. The appointment will take effect upon the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice on January 8, 2026.
In a separate decision, the President has appointed Ramesh Chander Dimri and Ms Neerja Kulwant Kalson as Additional Judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The appointments have been made in exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India and are part of the ongoing process to strengthen the judiciary.

The appointments were finalised after due constitutional procedure, including consultation with the Chief Justice of India, and aim to ensure the effective functioning of High Courts amid increasing judicial workload.
The press communiqué was issued by the Press Information Bureau, Delhi, and forms part of routine judicial appointments undertaken by the Union Government in coordination with the judiciary. [KNT]
