NMC must explain contradictions on SMVD medical college, says Ghulam Hasan Mir

Apni Party seeks probe, calls closure communal and harmful for J&K

Srinagar, Jan 7, KNT: Former minister and senior Apni Party leader Ghulam Hasan Mir on Wednesday questioned the credibility of the National Medical Commission over the cancellation of admissions at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College, Reasi, and demanded a thorough probe into the matter.

Talking to reporters, Mir said the National Medical Commission must clarify how it had declared the institution fit to function as a medical college just a couple of months ago, and then suddenly concluded during a recent visit that it lacked the required infrastructure.

“The NMC is answerable. A few months ago, it said the college had the ability to function as a medical institution. Two days ago, the same body said it lacks infrastructure. Who is responsible for this contradiction? Is it the NMC or the authorities of the SMVD Medical College?” Mir said.

Mir as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust said his party is demanding an independent probe to determine how the institution was first declared capable and later rendered unfit within such a short span of time. “This raises serious questions. How did a functional college suddenly become redundant?” he asked.

Mir said the closure of the medical college has caused immense harm to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly students who had secured admission. “This was an institution meant for students and a healthcare facility for the region. Shutting it down is wrong for the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

He also alleged that the entire episode has taken a communal turn, which he termed dangerous for an inclusive society. “Closing an educational institution on communal grounds is not a good trend. We live in an inclusive society, and we do not view things through the prism of religion,” he said.

The Apni Party leader urged authorities to immediately accommodate the students who were admitted to the college. “These students should not suffer and their future must be protected,” he said.

Mir said the episode has put a big question mark on the functioning of the National Medical Commission and reiterated that the regulator must come forward with clear answers. [KNT]
