Rs 2,000 bribe demanded to erase detention record, ACB registers case

Srinagar, Jan 3, KNT: The Anti-Corruption Bureau has arrested a clerk red-handed for demanding and accepting a bribe at the Tehsil Office Central Shalteng in Srinagar, officials said on Saturday.

According to officials, the ACB received a written complaint alleging that after the complainant was detained under preventive action under Sections 126 and 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita by orders of the First Class Executive Magistrate, a clerk deputed at the Tehsil Office Central Shalteng demanded illegal gratification of Rs 2,000. The bribe was allegedly sought for erasing the complainant’s detention record from the official registers.

The complainant, unwilling to pay the bribe, approached the ACB Srinagar and sought legal action against the accused public servant. On receipt of the complaint, a discreet verification was conducted, which confirmed the demand of illegal gratification by the accused.

Following the verification, officials said FIR No. 01/2026 under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, was registered at Police Station ACB Srinagar and investigation was taken up.

During the course of investigation, a trap team was constituted, which laid a successful trap and caught the accused clerk, identified as Laiq Ahmad Nath, a resident of Qamarwari Srinagar, red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe amount of Rs 2,000 from the complainant.

After completing all required medico-legal formalities, the accused public servant was taken into custody. Further investigation in the case is underway. [KNT]
