Srinagar, Jan 3, KNT: Students commuting on the Awantipora to Tral route have alleged rampant overcharging and illegal overloading by Sumo vehicle operators, accusing them of exploiting daily commuters, particularly students.
Many students told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that Sumo operators are charging Rs 40 per passenger, which they termed unjustified and unaffordable, especially for those who travel daily for education. They said the approved seating capacity of the vehicles is being violated, with operators ferrying 10 passengers instead of the permitted nine, compromising both safety and comfort.
Commuters alleged that despite repeated complaints, no effective action has been taken against erring transporters. They said students from economically weaker backgrounds are being forced to either pay the inflated fare or miss classes, as there is no alternative transport system available on the route.
Students said the situation reflects a complete lack of regulation on the Awantipora–Tral transport system and accused authorities of turning a blind eye to the issue. They added that overcrowding has become routine, increasing the risk of accidents.

The affected students urged the concerned transport authorities and the district administration to intervene immediately, enforce prescribed fare norms, and ensure that Sumo operators adhere to seating capacity rules so that students are not further burdened. [KNT]
