Traffic Police Kulgam Issues 36,492 Challans in 2025, Accidents Drop by 20 Percent

Over Rs 1.59 Crore Collected as Fine, 186 Vehicles Seized in South Kashmir

Kulgam, Jan 19, KNT: The Traffic Police Sector Kulgam and Qazigund registered significant enforcement and safety gains during the year 2025, with a marked reduction in road accidents and intensified action against traffic violations across south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

Officials said that under the leadership of DySP Mohd Aslam and under the direct supervision of the Senior Superintendent of Police Traffic Rural Kashmir S Ravinder Pal Singh, traffic police issued a total of 36,492 challans during the year. An amount of Rs 1,59,07,900 was realised as fine, while 186 vehicles were seized for various violations.

Comparing the data with the previous year, officials said road accidents in the district declined by around 20 percent, which they attributed to sustained enforcement, awareness initiatives, and focused intervention at accident prone locations.

During 2025, the traffic wing conducted 269 awareness programmes across schools, colleges, bus stands and public places, besides carrying out 1,197 special enforcement drives. Officials said these efforts played a crucial role in sensitising drivers, particularly students and young motorists, about traffic laws and road safety.

Traffic management remained a major challenge during the annual Amarnath Yatra and the peak fruit season, when heavy vehicular movement was witnessed on the Srinagar Jammu National Highway and internal roads. Officials said special measures were implemented to ensure the smooth and safe movement of pilgrims as well as fruit laden trucks.

As part of these measures, road width was reduced through barricading from Nowyug Tunnel to Alstop crossing on NH 44. Barricades were also installed at key locations including Khudawani town, Kulgam town from Gantaghar to Sangus crossing, and Hospital Road. Traffic personnel were equipped with night reflective jackets and hand held signalling devices during evening and night hours.

Officials said special drives were conducted against rash driving and stunt driving, crash barriers were erected at vulnerable spots, and enforcement was intensified in accident prone areas. Parking facilities were created in Kulgam town with the assistance of the Municipal Committee and other concerned departments, while encroachments and roadside vending were removed to ensure free movement of traffic.

The traffic police also enforced zero tolerance against visible violations such as non wearing of helmets, triple riding, dangerous driving, driving by juveniles, overloading in passenger vehicles, and vehicles operating without fitness.

Officials acknowledged the positive response and cooperation received from inhabitants, transporters, drivers, civil society, print and electronic media, as well as social media platforms, stating that public support played a major role in achieving the desired results. They also credited district police, district administration, and transport related departments for consistent support throughout the year.

For 2026, traffic police said they are committed to further improving hassle free traffic movement and reducing violations across Kulgam town, Qazigund town, other urban centres, and rural areas of the district. [KNT]
