Kupwara, Feb 1, KNT: The Jadda–Karnah road in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district continues to remain partially blocked due to heavy snowfall, causing difficulties for the local population and disrupting access to essential services.

The road, which serves as a key link for several remote villages in the Karnah area, has not been fully cleared despite repeated appeals from locals. As a result, vehicular movement remains restricted on several stretches, particularly where snow accumulation and road damage have compounded the situation.

An incident from the area has drawn attention after a woman was carried on the shoulders of locals due to the non-motorable condition of the road. Officials said vehicles were unable to pass through the snow covered and damaged stretch at the time of the incident.

Locals said prolonged partial blockage of the road has affected routine life and raised concerns, especially for patients, elderly people and expectant mothers who depend on the road for reaching medical facilities during emergencies.

Responding to the issue, the Roads and Buildings Department said snow clearance work on the final stretch of the Jadda–Karnah road is underway. The department stated that heavy snowfall had damaged the macadamized surface of the road, prompting a temporary suspension of mechanical snow clearance to avoid further deterioration.

Officials added that field staff have been directed to carry out manual snow clearance and assured that the road would be cleared up to ground level within a short period, following which restoration and repair work would be taken up.

Meanwhile, clearance operations are continuing, and authorities said efforts are being made to restore connectivity at the earliest, keeping in view the importance of the road for the border and far flung areas of Karnah. [KNT]
