Locals protest prolonged power cuts in LoC villages of Gurez Valley

Gurez, Dec 23, KNT: Locals of Aachora and Chorwan villages, situated near the Line of Control in the Gurez Valley of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, staged a protest on Tuesday against the Power Development Department and the local administration over prolonged and unscheduled power cuts.

The protesting inhabitants alleged that both villages remained without electricity for nearly two days, causing severe hardship amid harsh winter conditions. They said repeated complaints to the Power Development Department and the local administration went unanswered, forcing them to take to the streets in protest.

Speaking to reporters, a local inhabitant Azizullah said the power outage had completely disrupted daily life in the two villages. He alleged that despite multiple approaches to the authorities, no clear explanation was provided regarding the cause of the outage or the timeline for restoration. He also questioned why electricity supplied by NHPC was available at the tehsil headquarters while Aachora and Chorwan continued to suffer.

The protesters described the situation as discriminatory and accused the administration of apathy and negligence. They urged the District Administration Bandipora to explain the selective power supply and ensure accountability of the concerned departments.

Meanwhile, Sub Divisional Magistrate Gurez Mukhtar Ahmad said the disruption was caused by faults in electricity lines due to recent snowfall. He said with improvement in weather conditions, the issue was addressed and electricity supply has been restored in both Aachora and Chorwan villages. [KNT]
