Police Foil AIP’s Peaceful Sit-in Against MGNREGA Amendments in Kupwara

Srinagar, Jan 3, KNT: Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi on Saturday strongly condemned the administration for not allowing a peaceful sit-in against the recent amendments in MGNREGA, terming the move as undemocratic and an assault on the constitutional right to peaceful protest.

Inam Un Nabi also condemned the house arrest of senior AIP leaders, including MLA Langate Sheikh Khursheed, Party Spokesperson Peerzada Firdouse Baba and DDC member Muzaffar Dar besides other leaders, calling it a deliberate attempt to silence voices raising genuine public concerns.

He said the proposed sit-in was aimed at highlighting how the amendments to MGNREGA are undermining the spirit of the scheme and directly impacting rural livelihoods, particularly the poor and marginalised who depend on it for survival. “Raising issues related to employment, wages and job security under MGNREGA is not a crime. Suppressing peaceful dissent only deepens public distrust,” he said.

The AIP Chief Spokesperson appealed to the administration to act responsibly and allow the proposed peaceful protest scheduled for Monday at Baramulla. “Democracy cannot function through house arrests and prohibitory measures. The administration must respect democratic norms and allow people and their representatives to express themselves peacefully,” Inam Un Nabi added.

Inam further said that denying space for peaceful protest would force people to believe that their concerns are being deliberately ignored, something that is neither healthy for democracy nor governance. [KNT]
