Nitin Gadkari to Trigger Zoji-La Tunnel Breakthrough on June 9

Ganderbal, June 4, KNT: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari is scheduled to trigger the breakthrough of the strategically significant Zoji-La Tunnel on June 9, marking a major milestone in one of the most ambitious mountain infrastructure projects.

The 13.15-kilometre tunnel, being constructed beneath the Zoji-La Pass, is designed to provide all-weather connectivity between Jammu and Kashmir and the Union Territory of Ladakh, significantly reducing travel disruptions caused by heavy snowfall and extreme weather conditions.

Officials associated with the project said the breakthrough event will represent a crucial engineering achievement as excavation works from opposite ends of the tunnel meet, paving the way for the next phase of construction and finishing works.

The tunnel is being executed by Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) and forms part of a larger effort to improve road connectivity, logistics and transportation infrastructure in the Himalayan region.

Once completed, the Zoji-La Tunnel is expected to transform connectivity between Srinagar, Sonamarg, Drass, Kargil and Leh by ensuring year-round road access through one of the country’s most challenging mountain passes.

The Zoji-La Pass, located at an altitude of over 11,500 feet, remains prone to prolonged winter closures because of heavy snowfall, often disrupting movement of civilians, essential supplies and vehicles for several months every year.

Apart from improving civilian connectivity, the tunnel is also considered strategically important due to its role in strengthening access to border areas and enhancing transportation efficiency in the region.

The project has been closely watched as a key component of India’s broader infrastructure push in the Himalayan belt, with authorities expecting substantial economic, tourism and logistical benefits upon its completion.

The June 9 breakthrough ceremony is expected to be attended by senior officials, engineers and representatives associated with the project. [KNT]
