Srinagar, Sep 2, KNT: The All India Medical Students’ Association (AIMSA) has urged the Jammu and Kashmir government to enhance the monthly stipend of MBBS interns, citing disparity with other states and the financial strain faced by young medical graduates.
In a representation addressed to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, AIMSA Vice President Dr Mohammad Momin Khan highlighted that MBBS interns in J&K currently receive only Rs 12,000 per month. He said repeated assurances over the last six years had not translated into substantial progress, leaving medical graduates “disheartened and financially strained.”
The letter pointed out that states such as Bihar have recently revised the stipend of interns to Rs 27,000 per month in recognition of their contribution and hard work. “Unfortunately, J&K continues to lag far behind, which not only demoralizes the interns but also creates an atmosphere of disparity and neglect,” the association stated.

AIMSA has requested immediate intervention by the Chief Minister to expedite the process and ensure stipends are brought at par with other states. The association also urged authorities to explore all possible mechanisms to resolve the long-pending demand.
The students’ body said an enhancement in stipend would be a morale boost for interns who dedicate themselves to serving the public under challenging conditions. [KNT]
