Government declares flood in multiple low-lying areas after Jehlum breach

Srinagar, Sep 4, KNT: The river Jehlum breached its banks near Zinpora in Pampore on Thursday, triggering fresh fears of inundation as water slowly began entering nearby habitations.

According to government sources, the breach is expected to impact several areas including Pahroo, Tengan, Shalina, Kanihama, Lasjan and adjoining localities. The administration has already sounded a flood alert and declared flood in multiple low-lying areas along the river course.

Sources said that breach near Pampore has aggravated the situation, increasing the risk of widespread flooding in residential belts. By afternoon and evening dozens of areas will face flood.

Rescue and relief teams have been asked to remain on standby, while local authorities are closely monitoring the embankments to prevent further damage.

People in Tengan, Lasjan and adjoining areas have been advised to shift to safer locations. [KNT]
