Rented Transformer Sparks Controversy in Turgam Sonawari, Case Filed Against Locals and PDD Officials

Bandipora, April 10, KNT: A rented transformer has turned out to be an expensive solution for the residents of Malpora, Turgam Sonawari area of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district and local PDD (Power Development Department) officials, after a case was filed by the police following a dispute over its use. Locals allege that the case was registered at the behest of the local MLA.
According to sources, nearly a month ago, a 25 KV transformer in the Malpora area of Turgam Sonawari developed a technical fault due to overloading. In response, the local Panchayat, led by Sarpanch Muhammad Neyaz, approached PDD officials to request a replacement. However, the department reportedly ignored their pleas, prompting the locals to take matters into their own hands by borrowing a rented transformer to continue receiving electricity.
This decision to rent a transformer reportedly angered the local MLA, leading to the registration of a case against both the residents and PDD officials. The Opposition, particularly the PDP, has strongly condemned the MLA’s actions, with local party leaders claiming that the current regime is more repressive than the previous one, alleging that people no longer have the freedom to address basic issues like replacing a damaged transformer.
Locals argue that the move was politically motivated and that the rented transformer was only meant to serve as a temporary solution until the damaged one could be repaired.
The police, however, stated that the damaged transformer was allegedly sold to a private dealer, which led to the filing of the case. Authorities also confirmed that arrests have been made in connection with the incident, with more arrests expected.
Meanwhile, Executive Engineer PDD Sumbal, when contacted by the news agency Kashmir News Trust, said he had heard about the transformer issue from the locals and had already directed the Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) to replace it with a new one. “This is the information I have; beyond that, I am not aware of any further developments,” he added.
