Year 2022: J&K reports 246 human casualties

At least 246 people including 131 local militants and 38 militants from Pakistan were killed in the year 2022 in Jammu and Kashmir. 19 infiltrators were also killed this year.

The last month of the year witnessed only one encounter in Valley, though 4 militants were killed in a deadly firefight in the Sidra area of Jammu in the same month.

The data available with the news agency Kashmir News Trust reveals that among the 246 casualties, 131 were local militants, 38 non-local militants, 12 soldiers, 12 policemen, 2 Railway Protection Force personnel, 3 CRPF personnel, 13 local civilians, 2 Kashmiri Pandits, 3 Sarpanchs, and a Panch, 8 migrant workers, a CISF officer, an army porter, and 19 infiltrators.

The data reveals that Kashmir capital Srinagar witnessed at least 10 encounters resulting in the killing of 19 militants including 5 Pakistani ultras. These encounters raged in Shalimar, Rangpora Zakura, Hazratbal, Wanabal Nowgam, Rainawari, Bishambar Nagar, Soura, Sangam Palapora, Bemina and Nowgam area of the city and its outskirts.

Militants this year in Srinagar killed 3 cops in different attacks while a Selection Grade Constable from Kupwara was killed in a brief shootout in Soura Srinagar.

Ganderbal reported a single gunfight at Kawbagh Serch in which a militant Adil Ahmed Khan from Badarkund area of the same district was killed. Besides, Adil, another militant from Ganderbal Fayaz Ahmed was killed in South Kashmir’s Pulwama encounter.

Budgam district reported three encounters (Zolwa Chadoora, Tilsar Charar-e-Sharif and Waterhal) in which seven militants including one from Srinagar – Waseem Ahmed were killed. The district witnessed two encounters in January and the last one in August.

The four districts of South Kashmir reported over 60 gunfights. In some of the gunfights, militants managed to escape from the encounter spots.

At least 17 gunfights raged in Pulwama resulting in the killing of 37 militants including 5 militants from Pakistan. The gunfights in Pulwama district erupted in Chandgam, Naira, Nambal, Batapora Naina, Chewkalan, Charsoo, Arigam Tral, Pohu, Mitrigam, Aganhanzipora, Gundipora, Rajpora, Drabgam, Chatpora, Tujjan, Wandekpora and Khandipora. In one of the encounters at Naira village of the district, an army officer among two elite guard forces sustained injuries.

Shopian district reported nearly 20 encounters in which 28 militants were killed. Main encounters erupted in the hamlets of Kilbal, Nowpora Nadigam, Chermarg, Amshipora, Turkawangam, Budigam, Pandoshan, Badimarg Aalora, Kanju Ullar, Nagbal, Heff Shirmal, Baskuchan, Drach Keegam, Moolu, Nowgam, Kapran and Munjh Marg.

Anantnag district reported gunfights in Sirhama, Wutnar Kokarnag, Sirchand Pahalgam, Kreeri Dooru, Sheetpora Bijbehara, Rishipora, Hangulgund Kokarnag, Poshkeeri, Thajiwara, Tengpaw and Semthan. At least 18 militants were killed in these 11 encounters.

Kulgam district reported at least 17 encounters in which 23 militants were killed. These encounters raged in Okey, Hasanpora, Pariwan, Khurbatapora, Mirhama, Chayen, Kandipora, Mishipora, DH Pora, Newpora Kherpora, Nowpora Mir Bazar, Chewalgam, Awhatto and Kounsarmarg.

Data available with the news agency KNT reveals that North Kashmir’s Baramulla district reported at least 9 gunfights at different places including Malwah, Kreeri, Sopore, Tulibal, Wanigam Kreeri, Binnr, Bomai, Yedipora Pattan and Wanseeran Taripora. At least 15 militants affiliated with different outfits were killed in these firefights.

Bandipora district witnessed two gunfights in May at Brar Aragam and Salinder forest area in which 3 militants including two militants from Pakistan were killed.

Similarly, 3 gunfights raged in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district in which 7 militants including 4 militants from Pakistan and an incarcerated militant from Sedow Shopian were killed. These fights as per police raged in Nechama Rajwara area of Handwara, Chaktras Kandi and Chindigam Lolab.

District Kupwara also reported multiple gunfights along borders. Besides Kupwara, the fights along Line of Control were also reported from Kamalkote Uri, Rajouri, Shudipora Poonch, Kalal and Arina Sectors of Jammu region. At least 19 infiltrators were killed in these firefights. The areas where infiltrators were killed in Kupwara include Jumagund, Tangdhar, Bichu Keran and Tekrinar Machil.

Encounters also raged in Jalalabad Sunjwan, Palghar, Arina and Sidra areas of Jammu region. In April two non-local Jaish militants and a CISF officer were killed in Sunjuwan encounter of Jammu while 2 militants and 5 soldiers were killed in Palghar Rajouri attack.

Four civilians were killed during encounters between militants and joint forces in Kashmir Valley.

At least 27 civilians and an army porter were killed in 2022 in Jammu and Kashmir. These civilians include 2 Kashmiri Pandits, 4 political workers, and 8 non-locals. [KNT]
