Cutting across religious lines, Muslims, Pandits, and Sikhs Wednesday took out a march against the government proposal to set up a liquor shop in the Lagama Uri area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Eyewitnesses told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that scores of people participated in the march. The protesters were holding placards reading: ‘Sharab Khana Bandh Kro’.
“At a time when the government claims of waging a war against drug abuse, it is mulling to open up a wine shop in Lagama Uri. This will be destructive for the unemployed youth,” said a local Sumit Kumar Raina.
“Please don’t encourage liquor business and don’t see this trade through the prism of money. It will annihilate everything and will propagate moral degradation in this peaceful part of Kashmir,” said another protester.
“We want to appeal to the Lieutenant Governor to close this wine shop. They are playing with the future of our children,” the protesters said adding that instead of opening a wine shop, the government should provide jobs to the unemployed youth.
Later on, the protesters presented a memorandum to SDM and SDPO Uri requesting them not to allow the liquor trade in Uri. [KNT[
