BJP’s Politics of Kashmir Hills: NC Never Sought to Rename Kashmir’s Historical Hills

Srinagar, Sep 3, KNT: The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) yet again on Tuesday claimed that the National Conference wants to change the name of Shankaracharya and Hariparbat Hills in Kashmir.

During a press conference in Jammu, BJP candidate for Nagrota, Davindra Singh Rana claimed that none can change the names of these hills till BJP is in power. The statement has stunned some National Conference leaders. “I wonder why these hills are being repeatedly mentioned when we (NC) never talked about these,” National Conference leader Imran Nabi Dar told the news agency Kashmir News Trust.

Dar rubbished these claims, stating that the BJP’s sole intention is to polarize the people of Jammu and Kashmir on religious lines.

Dar emphasized that no NC leader or party statement has ever mentioned renaming the two hills and that the BJP is merely playing a political stunt to divide the people. He accused the BJP of having no meaningful issues to discuss and relying solely on playing the religious card.

Pertinently, Takht-e-Suleiman and Koh-i-Maran are also the names given by the people to these two hills in Kashmir.

National Conference leader said that it is an immaterial issue and people are least bothered about it. “Changing names of places is the hobby of BJP. People want jobs, a better standard of living, development, peace and prosperity. Communalism and polarization only add to the hardships and such issues don’t bring the bread and butter to the doorsteps of the people,” he said. [KNT]
