No Deaths in Doda Due to River Overflow; Drowning Incidents Misreported as Flood Casualties

Doda, June 27, KNT: The District Administration Doda has categorically denied reports circulating on WhatsApp and certain media websites claiming that lives were lost due to the rise in water level in the Chenab River. Terming the viral content as completely fake and misleading, officials clarified that no deaths have occurred due to any overflow or flood-like situation in the region. The administration has strongly advised the public to refrain from spreading such misinformation, which not only causes panic but also undermines public trust in verified communication.
However, authorities confirmed that three separate drowning incidents have taken place over the last two weeks — each unfortunate, but unrelated to any surge in the river’s water level. On June 14, two young brothers, Abrar Ahmed (12) and Asrar Ahmed (9), from Nepli village lost their lives while playing near the Chenab River at Pul Doda. On June 19, a woman identified as Payal Kumari, a resident of Jakyas, Tehsil Chilli Pingal, reportedly died by suicide after jumping from the Thathri bridge. The most recent incident occurred on June 23, when a fisherman, Basharat Hussain of Nagni village, Tehsil Kahara, drowned while fishing in Kalnai Nallah. His body was later recovered by rescue teams from SDRF with the help of local volunteers.
In response to these tragedies, the district administration has taken serious preventive measures. An order under No. 2213-21/DM/Doda dated 25.06.2025 has been issued, placing a ban on swimming, bathing, fishing, and all forms of unnecessary recreational activity in and around the Chenab River and other water bodies in the district. The order, issued in the interest of public safety, must be followed strictly by all residents.
The administration reiterated its appeal to citizens not only to comply with the river safety advisory but also to act responsibly by not sharing unverified news. Officials stressed that the spread of fake information, especially in sensitive matters involving public safety, can have serious consequences and may invite legal action.
The District Administration expressed gratitude to the public for their ongoing cooperation and urged everyone to rely only on official sources for updates, particularly during times of weather-related concern. [KNT]
