Kupwara, July 8, KNT: In a major crackdown against illegal mineral extraction, the Geology and Mining Department Kupwara, under the leadership of District Mineral Officer (DMO) Mumtaz Ahmad, carried out a series of surprise raids during night hours in various parts of the district.

The operations were conducted in mineral-sensitive zones including Gushi, Shanu Langate, and Khumriyal, where reports of unlawful mining and transportation of minerals had been mounting. Speaking to the news agency Kashmir News Trust, DMO Mumtaz Ahmad confirmed that a total of 25 vehicles used in illegal mining activities were seized within a span of 24 hours.

The seized vehicles include 11 tippers, 10 tractors, 3 dumpers, and one L&T machine, all of which were allegedly involved in unauthorized extraction and movement of minor minerals, especially sand, bajri, and other riverbed materials.

He further stated that a penalty of Rs 20 lakh has been imposed on the offenders under relevant provisions of the Mining Act. “We are committed to safeguarding natural resources and ensuring that legal provisions are not flouted for personal profit,” he added.

Officials from the Geology and Mining Department were accompanied by enforcement personnel and received logistical support from the local administration. Locals have appreciated the department’s firm stance against the illegal trade that has long threatened the ecological balance of the area.

The DMO warned that more such raids will follow and violators will be dealt with strictly. [KNT]
