127 J&K Police officers awarded Gallantry Medal on I-Day 2025

Srinagar, Aug 14, KNT: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Crime J&K Sujit Kumar, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar GV Sundeep Chakravarthy, and slain DySP Himayun Muzzamil are among 127 Jammu and Kashmir Police officers honoured with the Gallantry Medal on Independence Day 2025.

According to an official document, DySP Himayun Muzzamil, also a Kirti Chakra awardee (posthumously), laid down his life while fighting militants in an encounter in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on September 13, 2023.

Figures show that out of the total 233 Gallantry Medals announced this year, 152 personnel from the J&K region have been recognised for their bravery. J&K Police leads with 127 awards, followed by the Central Reserve Police Force with 20, Border Security Force with 16, Chhattisgarh Police with 14, and Uttar Pradesh Police with 17.

he Ministry of Home Affairs said that 1,090 personnel from police, fire, Home Guard and Civil Defence, and Correctional Services across the country have been honoured with Gallantry and Service Medals this year. These include 233 Medal for Gallantry, 99 President’s Medal for Distinguished Service, and 758 Medal for Meritorious Service.

Of the Gallantry Medal recipients, 54 personnel are from Left Wing Extremism-affected areas, 152 from Jammu and Kashmir, three from the North-East, and 24 from other regions.
