Indian Army Chief Upendra Dwivedi pledges organ donation at Army Hospital


New Delhi, Aug 22, KNT: Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi, accompanied by his wife Mrs Sunita Dwivedi, President of the Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA), pledged to donate their organs at the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) in New Delhi, giving a strong push to the Armed Forces Organ Retrieval and Transplantation Authority (AORTA).
The initiative is aimed at spreading awareness and encouraging members of the Armed Forces community to lead the nation in organ donation. Under the guidance of Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS), AORTA has emerged as a national leader in organ retrieval and transplantation.
The Indian Army has already set a benchmark with more than 26,000 personnel pledging organ donation during a single campaign, officials said.

Speaking on the occasion, General Dwivedi described organ donation as a service to humanity and an extension of the Armed Forces’ ethos of sacrifice and courage. He urged soldiers and their families to come forward, set an example, and inspire society at large. He also commended AORTA for its sustained efforts in awareness campaigns and motivating troops towards this noble cause.
In recognition of the role of healthcare workers, the Army Chief presented on-the-spot Chief’s Recommendation Cards to three frontline staff engaged in organ transplant care, including a housekeeper credited for maintaining high standards of hygiene and sanitation for patients. This gesture, officials said, highlighted the Army Medical Corps’ commitment to compassionate and holistic patient care.
The event also featured a solemn tribute to donor families, who were felicitated for their courage and compassion in extending the gift of life through organ donation. [KNT]
