Police foil drug smuggling bid in Kupwara, woman held with contraband

 

Kupwara, Aug 19, KNT: Police in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district claimed to have foiled a drug smuggling attempt after recovering contraband from a woman passenger during routine naka checking at Batergam near the Radio Station.

Officials said that a Police team from Police Station Kupwara intercepted a Hyundai i10 Sports vehicle bearing registration number JK15A-6188, which was moving from Batergam towards Kupwara. The driver allegedly tried to flee but was quickly apprehended by alert personnel.

On spot verification, the driver was identified as Afaq Mohiuddin Bhat, a resident of Aloosa Bandipora. The woman accompanying him was identified as Muneeba Begum, wife of Mehrajudin Bhat, also a resident of Aloosa Bandipora.

During checking, a heroin-like substance was recovered from the possession of the woman passenger. Police said a case under FIR No. 261/2025 has been registered at Police Station Kupwara and further investigation is underway to ascertain the source and intended destination of the narcotics.

Kupwara Police reiterated its resolve to continue the crackdown against drug smuggling and appealed to the public to cooperate in the ongoing drive against the menace. [KNT]
