19-year-old labourer electrocuted while fixing smart meters in South Kashmir’s Kulgam

Kulgam, Sep 16, KNT: A 19-year-old labourer from north Kashmir’s Handwara died after suffering an electric shock while working on smart meter installation in Yaripora area of Kulgam district on Tuesday.

Officials said the deceased, identified as Sadiq Ahmad Badana, son of Bashir Ahmad Badana of Molabal, Handwara, was employed with a private company, ‘Rahul Cables, engaged in fixing smart meters in Kulgam. During the course of work, he came in contact with a live wire and sustained a fatal shock.

He was initially shifted to Government Medical College Anantnag and later referred to SKIMS Soura. Doctors at SKIMS declared him brought dead upon arrival.

The incident has once again highlighted safety concerns surrounding ongoing smart meter installation works in different parts of the Valley. Locals have urged authorities and private contractors to ensure proper safety equipment and protocols for labourers engaged in high-risk electrical tasks.
