Budgam By-Election 2025: Four Aga Family Members Among Key Contenders

Budgam, Oct 20, KNT: The political landscape of Central Kashmir’s Budgam has turned vibrant and competitive as several prominent candidates, including four members of the influential Aga family, have entered the fray for the upcoming Budgam Assembly by-election. The rare family-centric contest has made this by-poll one of the most closely watched electoral battles in Jammu and Kashmir.
Among the four candidates from the Aga family are Aga Syed Mehmood, contesting on the National Conference (NC) ticket, Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi, representing the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Aga Syed Mohsin Mustafa, fighting as an Independent candidate and Aga Syed Mohsin, contesting on behalf of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP),
The presence of four members from the same religiously respected and politically influential family has added a distinctive dimension to the election, sparking curiosity among voters and analysts alike. Locals say the contest has brought Budgam into sharp political focus, with each candidate drawing support from different sections of society.
In addition to the Aga family contenders, the list of candidates includes Nazir Ahmad Khan from the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), Deeba Khan representing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and Muntazar Mohiuddin, who is contesting as an Independent.

Political observers believe that with so many influential names in the fray, the electoral arithmetic in Budgam could witness unexpected shifts. The division of votes among candidates with overlapping support bases, especially within the Aga family, could play a decisive role in determining the final outcome.
They say the by-election is not only a contest of parties but also of personal influence, religious clout, and grassroots connectivity. The traditional dominance of mainstream political parties like the NC and PDP is likely to be tested as new forces such as the AAP and independents seek to make inroads into the constituency.
Meanwhile, election authorities have confirmed that all necessary arrangements are being finalized to ensure smooth, transparent, and fair polling. Security reviews and administrative preparations are underway, with officials emphasizing strict adherence to the Model Code of Conduct.
“The Election Department is committed to conducting the Budgam by-election in a free, fair, and peaceful manner,” an official said, adding that polling schedules and security deployments will be announced shortly. [KNT]
