LoP Sunil Sharma Accuses Govt of Ignoring Flood Victims, Demands Probe Into PWD, Mining ‘Scams’
Srinagar, Oct 30, KNT: Leader of Opposition and Bharatiya Janata Party legislator Sunil Sharma on Thursday launched a sharp attack on the Jammu and Kashmir government, accusing it of ignoring the flood victims of Jammu and indulging in corruption in key departments.
Talking to reporters outside the Legislative Assembly after staging a walkout, Sharma said the government has shown “complete insensitivity” toward those affected by the recent floods in several districts of Jammu division. “Despite large-scale destruction, the government has failed to provide adequate relief and rehabilitation to the victims. Not a single senior minister has visited the affected areas,” Sharma said.
He alleged large-scale irregularities in the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Mining Department, demanding a time-bound probe. “These departments have become hotbeds of corruption. Contracts are being awarded in violation of norms, and funds meant for infrastructure development are being siphoned off,” he claimed.

Sharma also accused Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of violating the Model Code of Conduct by announcing the opening of a Law College in Ompora, Budgam, during an ongoing election process. “The announcement was a clear attempt to influence voters and is a direct breach of the code. The Election Commission must take cognizance and act,” he said.

The BJP leader reiterated his party’s commitment to highlighting public issues both inside and outside the Assembly. “We walked out because the government refused to discuss the miseries of flood victims. Our protest will continue until accountability is ensured,” he said.
Earlier, BJP legislators disrupted the Assembly proceedings, demanding an adjournment motion over the recent natural calamities in Jammu. The Speaker disallowed the motion, leading to noisy scenes and the eventual walkout. [KNT]
