Speaker Slams Kupwara Administration for Failing to Report Former MLA’s Death

Srinagar, Oct 23, KNT: A moment of embarrassment marked the opening day of the autumn session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Thursday when Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather reprimanded the Kupwara district administration for failing to report the death of former Langate MLA, Muhammad Sultan Panditpori, whose name was missing from the House’s obituary references.

Raising the issue during the proceedings, the Speaker expressed strong disapproval over what he termed as an “irresponsible attitude” by the local authorities. “It is unfortunate that the Kupwara administration did not inform the Assembly Secretariat about the demise of a former legislator. Such negligence reflects poorly on official coordination,” Rather said.

He stressed that the administration is duty-bound to communicate such developments promptly so that due respect can be paid to former public representatives during the House’s official sessions. “These are solemn proceedings where we honour those who have served the people. Any lapse in reporting their demise is unacceptable,” the Speaker observed.

The omission drew attention and support from several legislators who agreed with the Speaker’s remarks, terming the oversight as a serious procedural lapse.
