PM Modi Urges Citizens to Uphold Constitutional Duties on Constitution Day

New Delhi, Nov 26, KNT: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday called upon citizens to fulfil their Constitutional duties, stating that these responsibilities form the foundation of a strong and vibrant democracy. In a Constitution Day letter addressed to the public, the prime minister said strengthening democratic institutions requires active participation, particularly through voting in national, state and local elections.

Modi said schools and colleges should mark the day by recognising first time voters who turn eighteen, adding that such ceremonies would instil a sense of involvement among young citizens. He recalled Mahatma Gandhi’s belief that rights flow from the performance of duties and said fulfilling these duties underpins social and economic progress.

The prime minister paid tribute to Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar and others involved in drafting the Constitution, and also remembered the leadership of Vallabhbhai Patel, Birsa Munda and Mahatma Gandhi during the freedom movement. He said the chapter on Fundamental Duties in Article 51A guides citizens toward collective national development.

Recalling Sardar Patel’s role in unifying India, the prime minister said his leadership also inspired action on Articles 370 and 35A, noting that the Constitution is now fully in force in Jammu and Kashmir with all constitutional rights available to women and marginalised communities.

He said Birsa Munda’s legacy continues to inspire the nation’s commitment to justice and dignity for tribal communities. Modi added that the Constitution has empowered individuals from humble backgrounds, including himself, to pursue public service at the highest levels.

He encouraged citizens never to miss an opportunity to vote, saying active participation remains central to nation building and democratic strength. [KNT]
