Salary Withheld for Months, Asha Workers in Hajin Block Stage Protest

Bandipora, Nov 24, KNT: A group of Asha workers from Block Hajin in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Monday staged a protest outside the Community Health Centre Hajin, demanding immediate release of their pending salaries. The workers said they have not been paid for the last four months, a delay they described as deeply distressing and financially crippling, especially with winter intensifying.

The protesting Asha workers gathered at the hospital gate and said their repeated pleas to authorities had gone unanswered. Many said the prolonged non-payment had forced them to borrow money for daily household expenses, children’s school fees and medical needs, making survival increasingly difficult.

Asha worker Shameema said workers in other blocks of Bandipora had already received their dues while Hajin block continued to wait. She said around 250 workers were affected and struggling to sustain their families. “We are facing serious problems due to non-payment of salaries. I am a single mother, and meeting school expenses for my child has become impossible,” she said, adding that they had already approached the CMO Bandipora and BMO Hajin without any outcome.

When contacted, Chief Medical Officer Bandipora Dr. Ishtiyaq Naik told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that the delay was due to technical issues in the cyber treasury system. He said he had already instructed the Block Accounts Manager to continue processing pending payments and assured that the matter would be resolved within two days. [KNT]
