Supreme Court allows Sonam Wangchuk to join wife’s challenge to NSA detention

New Delhi, Nov 25, KNT: The Supreme Court has allowed climate activist Sonam Wangchuk to be joined by his wife, Dr. Gitanjali J. Angmo, in challenging his detention under the National Security Act. Family sources informed Kashmir News Trust that the couple will seek a consolidated hearing of their respective pleas.

A bench led by Justice Aravind Kumar agreed that Wangchuk, as the detainee, should have an opportunity to be heard in person and permitted his inclusion in the matter. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Union government, sought time to respond to a rejoinder filed by Dr. Angmo through advocate Sarvam Ritam Khare. The court adjourned the matter to December 8, 2025.

Dr. Angmo has alleged that the detention of her husband was motivated by malicious intent and noted that state action began shortly before the Leh council elections. She contended that claims labelling Wangchuk as the chief provocateur in the September 24 violence are false and inconsistent with the material on record. Her petition also contends that the Home Ministry reacted adversely to Wangchuk’s advocacy on Ladakh statehood and Sixth Schedule safeguards.

The court’s order to list the combined pleas on December 8 sets the stage for a fuller judicial review of the grounds of detention and the allegations raised by the petitioners. [KNT]
