IndiGo Initiates Corrective Measures to Contain Nationwide Flight Cancellations

Srinagar, Dec 6, KNT: India’s largest domestic airline IndiGo has begun a series of corrective steps to control widespread flight cancellations after several days of disruptions across major airports. The airline, facing acute crew-availability constraints under the updated Flight Duty Time Limitations norms, has initiated what it calls a phased stabilisation plan to bring schedules back on track.

Officials said the airline has started revising its crew rosters, expanding rest-management buffers, and reducing the number of night-intensive rotations that had become difficult to staff under the tightened regulations. The recalibration aims to prevent last-minute shortages that triggered hundreds of cancellations this week.

IndiGo officials further said that it has also trimmed a part of its winter schedule, identifying routes where frequency could be temporarily reduced to match available cockpit and cabin crew strength. According to the airline, this short-term reduction is intended to protect reliability on high-density sectors and avoid cascading delays.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has granted IndiGo a one-time exemption from select night-duty restrictions to ease pressure on pilot utilisation. However, this temporary relief is meant only to support the transition period until the airline’s reworked rosters become fully operational.

The carrier has additionally been dealing with technical and operational bottlenecks, including winter congestion and runway-capacity stress at major hubs. Officials said these factors have been contributing to irregularities but insisted the primary challenge remains aligning crew availability with the revised regulatory framework.

IndiGo maintains that full operational normalcy will return gradually as updated rosters are implemented and staffing gaps are smoothed out. The airline has apologised to affected passengers and said it is increasing communication channels to ensure timely updates on flight status. [KNT]
