Study Finds Over One-Fifth of Vodafone Idea Users Inactive
Vi’s Real Subscriber Strength Under Question as Active Users Far Below Reported Base

New Delhi, Dec 11, KNT: More than one-fifth of Vodafone Idea’s reported subscriber base is inactive, according to a new study that raises concerns about the telecom company’s actual user strength and engagement levels. The report states that out of Vi’s 197.2 million declared users, only 154.7 million are active, signalling a substantial gap in real network utilisation.
The findings also highlight that Vi’s usage indicators remain significantly lower compared to industry leaders Jio and Airtel. While the company’s reported ARPU stands at Rs 167, the study notes that when calculated solely on active users, the figure rises to Rs 209. Analysts say this narrows the gap with competitors but simultaneously underscores how inactive SIMs distort headline revenue metrics.
The report points to weaker user engagement as a key concern. Vi’s average monthly voice usage stands at 585 minutes, nearly 30 percent below active user benchmarks of its peers. Data consumption averages 24 GB per user, lower than Airtel’s 27.6 GB and Jio’s 24.6 GB.
Experts cited in the study say these gaps explain Vodafone Idea’s relatively slow revenue growth despite continued investment in network improvements. Although the company has recently begun stabilising subscriber losses, analysts believe boosting active user participation will be essential for any meaningful financial turnaround. [KNT]
